One
of the highlights of Khojand, the second city of Tajikistan, and
capital of the northern Sughd, is the square between the "Thursday"
market and the religious complex incorporating a mosque, mausoleum
and minaret. Further north, the Syr Darya river (Jaxartes of ancient
times) flows majestically through the city on its journey from the
Tian Shan mountains to the Aral Sea.
